What is this all about?

A Good Runner is an online running course designed by the Love Trails team. We all know the A, B, Cs of running. There's a lot of free content online. So this course explores the lesser known and we think more interesting & relevant aspects of this amazing thing we call running. A Good Runner integrates disparate concepts like the science of habit formation, environmental psychology and injury prevention.

You'll dive into mobility, strength and conditioning, injury prevention, running mechanics, daily habits, stretching, exercise science, environmental psychology, the history of running footwear & training plans. You'll also get a master class on how humans evolved to move and run, and how the modern world all around us is impacting our running aspirations. You'll also get a birds eye view on everything we've learnt to pull it all together into a consistent & integrated training & running philosophy. This is life changing stuff & we believe it'll change your relationship with running forever.

A Good Runner is made up of 11 carefully curated movement classes & talks on Zoom, plus reading material, optional homework, group runs and more. Taking place over 4 and a bit weeks, starting next Wednesday (24th Feb). Sign up closes Tuesday night at 23:00. The course won't repeat again till autumn 2021.

If you can't make the live lessons it doesn't matter as everything is recorded and you get 6-months access to everything via an online platform.

Course Overview & Lesson Plan

On this 4-week online course, you will gain the knowledge, tools and mindset to become a confident, resilient, strong & mindful runner.

Lesson 1: How to improve your running mechanics & pinpoint areas for improvement

24th Feb 18:00-19:00

Lesson 1: How to improve your running mechanics & pinpoint areas for improvement

In this lesson you will understand why your running capacity is dictated just as much by your movement capacity, as it is by your aerobic capacity. We learn that a good runner is an efficient runner; and discover how to run whilst expelling minimal effort for maximum output. A series of four movement tests you'll perform at home allows you to benchmark your strength & mobility, so you can pinpoint areas you should focus on improving.

Lesson 3: The Tiny Habits® Method for Good Runners

1st Mar 18:00-19:00

Lesson 3: The Tiny Habits® Method for Good Runners

In this session you will learn how to design new habits into your daily routine in order to be a better runner, using the Tiny Habits® Method. Tiny Habits—created by Dr. BJ Fogg, a world-renowned Behavior Scientist at Stanford University—is based on 20 years of research and Dr. Fogg’s experience personally coaching over 40,000 people. Unlike anything that’s come before, this system—what Dr. Fogg has coined “Behavior Design”—cracks the code of habit formation.

NEW TIME: 22nd Mar 18:00-19:00

Lesson 5: How to train the muscles in your feet to avoid injury + a brief history of running footwear

This presentation will begin with a brief history and evolution of running footwear. Mechanics of different types of running footwear will be discussed. You'll learn about the concept of the foot core, and you'll be instructed in exercises to train the small and large muscles of the foot to build strength and prevent injury. 10th Mar 18:00-19:00

Lesson 6: How to use stretching to enhance your running practice

You will learn the fundamental runners stretches to improve flexibility in your hips, hamstrights, glutes, calfs & lumber spine. By improving the range of movement you have in these areas, and combining this with good mobility and strength practices you will improve your movement capacity and thus be able to run further and faster without breaking down. You'll also lessen your chance of picking up an injury.

Lesson 8: How to further unlock the power of running in your life

We all know the basics of running. We know the ‘ABC’ of it, that it makes us fitter and healthier. In this class, though, you will learn about the plethora of additional benefits that can be derived from running in certain environments. In short, you will discover how running can make you better at your job, more independent, a more attentive friend or partner, care more for the environment, enhance your concentration levels, improve exam results, and even feel better about your body image. You will then learn how to adjust your running practice to maximise these benefits.

Lesson 9: How to build strength & power for running

17th Mar 18:00-19:00

Lesson 9: How to build strength & power for running

In this lesson you will learn that to run efficiently you must direct force correctly. You'll learn which muscles you use when you run, and how they work together to propel you forward. You will learn about the three forces at play as you run; downward force (the force you create), reaction force (the displacement force the ground creates) and gravity. You will learn how to improve your strength and power to run faster, stronger, more efficiently and with a lesser chance of picking up an injury. You will come away knowing fundamental strength & conditioning exercises to work muscles in your ankles, hips, quads, trunk and hamstrings.

Peter Francis

Peter Francis

Peter Francis saw his teenage years transformed by a miracle drug called running. His elation was soon followed by despair in the form of 12-years of repetitive injuries. Spurred on by personal injustice, Peter pursued 3-science degrees, multiple coaching and consultancy roles before making a breakthrough in the form of what had seemed like an unlikely comeback in 2016 aged 29. For the first time in his life, he ran for almost 3-years uninterrupted and ran multiple personal bests (33:46 10-km; 78:00 half marathon).
